About us

A-Day-Without-Driving is a non-profit organization based in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California. This grass-roots movement aims to help guide our brothers and sisters to a way that we can help preserve the environment. Unlike other, more broad reaching organizations, we focus our efforts on a very tangible aspect of our carbon footprint - driving.

This movement has four goals:

  • Raise awareness of global warming caused by humankind
  • Reduce our carbon footprint by simple actions
  • Support research of renewable resources and conservation
  • Create a day where nobody drives a car!!!
  • Why we formed

A-Day-Without-Driving was founded by Nathan Jauvtis in 2009. He was inspired by his friends and through years of interaction with the community in Ithaca, NY. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell University, he was exposed to very poor and degrading air quality while living in Southern California. It was obvious that something had to be done.

Determined to make a positive impact, and recently reinvigorated after having been introduced to former Vice President Al Gore’s work, A-Day-Without-Driving was born! As the people who brought us, “An Inconvenient Truth,” so eloquently put it:

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

There is no simple way to solve this problem, but through simple actions, we can make a big difference.

    Global warming in a nutshell

Carbon dioxide is a major component of greenhouse gasses. These gasses cause the phenomenon of global warming by not allowing the earth to reflect some of the sun’s energy. This contained energy is observed as heat results in an ever-increasing temperature of our atmosphere.

Some greenhouse gasses occur naturally and are produced more rapidly due to global warming, thus compounding the problem. Other greenhouse gasses, like the carbon dioxide we create, can be reduced. This reduction is a crucial step we must take in order to regulate and maintain the earth’s climate conditions as we know it.

    Our fundraising

Unlike other carbon offset sites, we do not offer "carbon credits" or "carbon offset points." We simply raise funds to donate to the projects or groups like those shown here. We are continuously searching for organizations that are on the brink of discovery and need just that little bit extra funding to help make that discovery.

Your donations can be made to the group of your choice or to the "Green Pool" where we give one lump sum to a project or organization that we have not quite found yet.

To those familiar with fundraising, we operate as a pass-through fundraising organization. At this time, we are not yet formally affiliated with the organizations shown on our pledge page, so we must cover our operating expenses. Our volunteers donate their time, and your donations help support our efforts. As a small organization, we are able to adapt to help run a lean operation, and with help from the community we aim to keep our costs low. Our goal is to pass through over 95% of the money that we raise. A-Day-Without-Driving is in the process of acquiring its non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations are tax-deductible.
